December 8th News Report from your Los Angeles Representative

Happy Friday everyone,

A mere month ago, the industry was shocked by news that Disney was considering purchasing 20th Century Fox's film and television assets: today many media outlets are reporting that details of just such a deal may be confirmed as early as next Wednesday. Deadline this week published a comprehensive analysis of what "one of the most cataclysmic shakeups to ever happen" would mean for the broader industry.

Several stories this week framed Disney's intended purchase of Fox as a salvo in an all-out war against streaming giant Netflix. A Variety headline this week asked "Would Disney, With Control of Hulu and Fox Studios, Have Formula for a Netflix Killer?"

A New York senator introduced legislation yesterday that would end the state’s $420 million a year film-tax credit program, saying it needs to be scrapped in the face of a major state deficit next year. As detailed in the Democrat and Chronicle below, the bill has yet to attract any co-sponsors and would need support from the Democratic-led Assembly which earlier this year approved a three-year extension of the program as part of the current state budget.

Reports of sexual misconduct in Hollywood continue to grab headlines and now one prominent Los Angeles advocacy group, Women in Film, is taking steps to address what many believe is a systemic problem in the media and entertainment industries. As reported in the Los Angeles Times below, with seed money from the William Morris Endeavor talent agency, Women in Film set up a help line to report cases of abuse and is assembling a roster of nearly two dozen attorneys to represent victims for free.

Finally this week, the lack of studio space back in Ontario continues to grab headlines but there was recent good news on that front. As detailed in Playback below, Toronto’s City Council has approved a plan to purchase Showline Studios from Canada Post to ensure the facilities are maintained as studio space.
