February 18 FilmOntario Update

Event at Queen’s Park – March 2, 2020

FilmOntario will be hosting a networking reception for MPPs at Queen’s Park on March 2nd. This event will take place from 5 – 7 pm, in Committee Room 230 in the Main Legislature Building at Queen’s Park.

The purpose of the event is to thank the government for their ongoing commitment to the industry and to educate MPPs about the industry. Members are invited to join us but space is limited so please RSVP early. Please note, you must bring picture ID to enter Queen’s Park.

We will also be arranging a few meetings with key government and opposition MPPs during the day. If you are interested in participating in a meeting, please indicate your interest when you RSVP.

Ministers’ Film and TV Advisory Panel

On February 13th, Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries Lisa MacLeod announced the creation of a Film and Television Advisory Panel to provide evidence and advice to her and Minister of Finance Rod Phillips on industry trends, challenges and growth opportunities. FilmOntario Board Member Jim Mirkopoulos is to Chair this panel, which also includes Board members John Weber and David Carter, and Managing Director Cynthia Lynch.

The announcement of this Panel fulfills a government commitment made in the 2019 Provincial Budget, one that FilmOntario had asked for in its Budget Submission. We are therefore very pleased to see the launch of the Panel and are looking forward to getting to work on solutions for the industry.

While we wait for the Panel’s final recommendations, due in Fall 2021, we will continue all our ongoing work on the issues that we have identified as being important to members and the industry. If you have any questions about the Panel, please do not hesitate to be in touch.

2020 Provincial Budget Consultations

The Province of Ontario has recently wrapped up consultations for the 2020 Provincial Budget.

FilmOntario made submissions to the Ministry of Finance and the Standing Committee on Finance and Economic Affairs on behalf of our members.

Our submission focused on:
acknowledging the government’s commitment to stable tax credits, and the importance of maintaining that commitment;
suggestions for modernizing the tax credits and reducing red tape;
targeted support for Ontario-based content creators;
the importance of Ontario Creates and NOHFC support to the industry;
and
laying the groundwork for industry growth and the need for a diverse and well-trained workforce to make that growth possible.

You can read the full submission here.

The government has committed to delivering the 2020 Budget before March 31, 2020.

Upcoming Ontario Creates Program Deadlines

Ontario Creates has begun announcing deadlines for the 2020-21 funding year:

The Ontario Creates Film Fund – Production streams (Drama and Documentary) are intended to increase the level of domestic feature film production in Ontario. The Film Fund provides support to Ontario producers for feature film projects in the final stages of production financing. There are three deadlines in 2020 for this program, with the first one on March 11, 2020.
