Brought to you by the Worker’s Health and Safety Centre (WHSC) and NABET, this module provides a detailed look at forklift safety and is designed for members who operate counterbalanced forklift trucks. The course content considers the work environment along with the role of the operator and others in the workplace. Participants will learn about and discuss the design and operation of counterbalanced forklift trucks. Stability and tipovers, rear wheel swing, unsafe loads and other potential causes of accidents will be discussed. Workplace design issues including inadequate lighting and tight work spaces will also be discussed. The module also explains the requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations along with other relevant laws, codes, standards and guidelines.

On the second day of training there will be a scheduled practicum whereby the instructor will evaluate each participants forklift operating skills. Each technician will each be required to spend approx one ½ hour on the forklift, to satisfy the required safety standards and successfully complete the course.

After completing this module, participants will have a better understanding of the basic operating procedures for the safe handling of counterbalanced forklifts and the hazards associated with their use.

Participants will gain knowledge and practical skills related to each of the following issues at the Forklift Training Course:

  • Knowing the basic characteristics of forklift trucks. Participants will learn about the design of counterbalanced forklift trucks and basic operating principles.
  • Recognizing the hazards. The module includes a detailed discussion about stability and tipovers, rear wheel swing, excess speed, limited visibility and unsafe loads. Hazards caused by the work environment will also be discussed including inadequate lighting, poor housekeeping and tight work spaces.
  • Understanding the health effects. Health effects discussed include broken bones and fatalities caused by crushing, neck and back injuries and carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Complying with the law. In addition to the general provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, relevant acts, codes, standards and guidelines will be discussed. Among these are the Building Code Act, Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and the Ministry of Labour's Guidelines for Safe Operation of Powered Lift Trucks.
  • Identifying and assessing hazards. Important identification and assessment tools to be discussed include pre-operating safety checks.
  • Recommending control measures and programs. This module focuses on the need for effective training for forklift operators and other workplace parties along with improving the design of the workplace to allow for safer operation. Vehicle selection and maintenance are also discussed.

A wallet certificate will be mailed to you 2-4 weeks after completion of the course. This training expires after 3 years, whether or not it is acknowledged on the card!!!!

RETRAINING: Operators of lift trucks shall receive retraining at intervals not exceeding three years. This is according to the mandate of the CSA Safety Standards for Lift Trucks. It also states that retraining shall meet the requirements of Clause 6.

Additional Notes
Effective June 2004, there were changes to the delivery of the Forklift Operator Skills Training Course, particularly for new Forklift Operators. Therefore the course content and format has been amended. Day 1 of this course is theory and in-class training. On Day 2, participants will be scheduled for their practical test based on their previous Forklift Operation experience. This skills training program meets Ministry of Labour Competency Guidelines.
