Safety First! Become a Joint Health and Safety Committee Member today!

During these times of heightened health and safety concerns and measures due to COVID-19, many of our signatory Producers have turned their minds to establishing JHSC in their workplaces as work begins to resume. Pursuant to the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) employers are required to have a JHSC consisting of at least one (1) certified management rep and one (1) certified worker rep when there are more than twenty (20) employees. For more information please click on the JHSC Guide button below.

We are pleased to announce that we are hosting another private Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) virtual training session for our Membership.

This 5-day intensive Ministry of Labour approved course will be held through the Worker's Health and Safety Centre via Zoom. A JHSC assists in providing greater protection against workplace injury, illness, and deaths. JHSC involves representatives from workers and employers, this co-operative involvement ensures that everything possible is done to identify and eliminate or mitigate workplace health and safety hazards.

Time: 9am - 4pm

In order to be certified, a person must complete Parts 1 and 2 of mandatory training: Basic Certification and Workplace-Specific Hazard Training.

Part 1, Basic Certification provides a complete understanding of occupational health and safety legislation, including the rights and responsibilities of workplace parties and certified responsibilities on joint health and safety committees in particular. This will include a full discussion about the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and the purpose and requirements of workplace health and safety policies and programs. Equally important, participants learn how to identify, assess, and control, or better yet eliminate workplace hazards.

Part 2, Workplace-Specific Hazard Training focuses on significant hazards in the workplace. It covers RACE methodology (recognize, assess, control, and evaluate) on how to assess those hazards and ways to control and/or eliminate them. Each module is designed to build on the knowledge gained in the Basic Certification training and apply it to specific workplace hazards with emphasis on measures to eliminate or control exposes. Our selected six hazards are:

  • Electrical Hazards
  • Lighting Hazards
  • Safety Hazards
  • PPE
  • Indoor Air Quality
  • Workplace Violence and Harassment

Refresher training is required every three (3) years to maintain certification.
